Engagement Photos at the Devonian Fossil Gorge

Alyssa + Ben

Getting engagement photos taken may seem like somewhat of a chore with all that goes into it. You spend time finding the right photographer, planning a date, picking out matching outfits, making your hair curl perfectly, and (for these two) driving over an hour and a half to get to the session. Ben and Alyssa made the trip to Iowa City for their engagement photos on one of the hottest days yet this summer. Despite the long drive, heat, and swarms of mosquitoes, these two laughed and enjoyed each other's company while exploring one of Iowa's most interesting displays of geological history.

While some couples prefer a more urban setting for their engagement photos, an outdoor setting was fitting for Alyssa and Ben and helped me to get to know a little more about the couple. I learned that Alyssa works in environmental management for Iowa's parks when she said she should really let someone know about this poison ivy out here. Luckily we all knew what poison ivy looks like and were able to avoid it.

These two were so incredibly sweet to each other throughout the session. Alyssa had the biggest smile on her face the whole time and I could tell that she is ready to continue growing in her relationship and future with Ben. After our session Alyssa emailed me to tell me that she has only ever seen Ben as excited about getting their pictures back as he has been about buying a new cow or tractor for his cattle farm.

I had such a great time documenting Alyssa + Ben's excitement and love for one another. Sessions like this and the all of feedback that I get from couples are what makes me love my job. I wish these two happy planning and I can't wait to capture their big day next April.

Congratulations Alyssa + Ben!
